Current research suggests mindfulness meditation has many health benefits, including enhancing immune function and reducing stress levels. To investigate the temporary relationship between meditation and immune function, we will be collecting saliva samples for IgA analysis via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and assessing right-left frontal cortical alpha-band (8-13 Hz) brain waves via electroencephalogram. Participants will be given an experimental treatment of a 30 minute mindfulness meditation session or a 30 minute audiobook, and samples will be taken prior to, immediately after, and one hour after intervention. We expect to see an increase in IgA quantity and more brain asymmetrical hemispherical frequencies after treatment. With this information of the relationship between immune function and mindfulness, meditations could be implemented to improve the health of a college-aged population.
