The Montgomery site in Kenosha County is recorded to be the first cabin built by Euro-Americans in the county. The first Euro-American occupants arrived circa 1834-35 and left around 1839. Historical records show a later occupation of the site, with a separate cabin and house being built in the mid 1850’s, with the second cabin abandoned ca. 1870. A collaboration between UW-Parkside’s Archaeology program, the Kenosha Public Museum, and the Kenosha County Archeological Society has resulted in the excavation of several areas of the site between 1975-77 and again in 2013, 2015, and 2017 and the processing and analysis of numerous artifacts. In this study, I will look at white clay pipe bowls, stems, and fragments found at this site. By using dating methods introduced by Harrington, Binford, or a combination of both recommended by Hanson, I hope to detail the time period(s) when this site was occupied, either by Euro-American or Native Americans before them.
